Egyptian Mummies

 

Get Stuffed The Egyptians believed that there were five important parts which made up a human being, namely; their names, shadow, their spirit (or Ka), immortality (or Akh) and their personality (or Ba). They thought that most of these joined a person at birth. Egyptians believed in the afterlife. They thought that the body had to be preserved in order for the dead to progress to the afterlife. Therefore they had GRUESOME ways to make sure the body didn’t rot.The whole process took a total of 70 days to do.
Process 1 - Your brain was removed through the nostrils and thrown away. A “slicer” priest made a long cut along the left side of the stomach. Process 2 - Your insides (except your heart which was left in your body) were placed in canopic jars which had lids representing the heads of the children of Horus. Your intestines went into “Kebehsenuf” (the Falcon), your lungs went into “Hapi” (the ape), your stomach went into “Duamutef” (the jackal), and your liver went into “Imesty” (the man). YUK!!!!!!!!

 

Process 3 - Your body was covered in a type of salt called natron for 40 days. This would soak up any excess fluids and make your skin go all prune like.  You were then stuffed with lots of bandages and sawdust (this was where your insides had been. EEEEKKKKK!!!!!),

Process 4 -  Your body was then rubbed with oils to make the skin soft.

Process 5 - You were covered in resin to make it waterproof, then bandaged up. This took 15 days.

Process 6 - If you were wealthy you would have a mask put over your face and amulets were placed between the layers of bandages.

Process 7 - Then you would be placed into a wooden coffin, which was painted with hieroglyphics to protect you in your next life.

Only now are you ready to enter the afterlife (I bet that you would be pleased to have an eternal rest after all this!!!).
