Tutankharmun

We think (but we are not 100% sure) that King Tutankharmun became Pharaoh (or King) of Egypt in about 1336 B.C. at the age of 9. This is why we call him the “Boy King”. Can you imagine that some of you reading this could be ruling a country bigger than Great Britain , at your age.

When he was born he was called Tutankhaten, which meant “Living image of the Aten” .The Aten was a god who didn’t have an image, so his name basically meant that he was the living representation.  During his “reign”(or rule as King) he changed his name to Tutankhamun. It showed that his power came from the god Amun (who was seen as the Head of all of the gods in Egypt ).

He married Ankhasenamum when he was just 9 years old. This made him rich because the women always had the inheritance passed down to them rather than the boys. There is very little known about Tutankhamun (mainly because all of the hieroglyphics which mentioned him were either written over or scrubbed off). When Carter found his tomb he found “wonderful things”. The tomb was intact and contained an amazing collection of treasures including a stone sarcophagus.
The sarcophagus contained three gold coffins nested within each other. Inside the final one was the mummy of the boy-king, Pharaoh Tutankhamun.

He died at the age of 17 or 18. He was buried in the Valley of the Kings .

There are many stories saying that he was murdered, but recent technology has shown that he died of natural causes
